The availability of compute resources is as important as the consolidation of HPC competence of the users. The HLRN users have access to local and scientific consultants in the HLRN network of expertise which help in the course of solving professional problems. Technical and scientific expertise is available at the two HLRN sites in Berlin and Göttingen as well as at other scientific research institutions in the network. They offer area specific knowledge and help in the transition for applications from compute clusters towards high performance computing resources. To link research in the fields of scientific computing and application sciences, university chairs, research institutes, and local networks of expertise in the federal countries are involved. These institutions are an integral component to support scientific young academics and for the education in the field of scientific computing.
Chairs at universities and scientific research institutions play an important role in the course of educating young academics with respect to scientific computing and in the different application fields. The barrier to work on the high performance computing machine can be reduced and the efficient usage can be improved by good educational offers.
Each federal country in the HLRN alliance contributes staff from universities and research institutions which work as consultants in the HLRN network. In general the colleagues are also members of local HPC communities which differ whth respect to organizational structure and networking properties. The following organizational alliances contribute to the HLRN alliance.
The scientific consultants combine their expertise on an application area with the experience using huge compute systems. They accompany the users extensively and qualified in the course of preparation and realization of their HPC applications with respect to the choice of methods, problem adapted algorithms and the efficient usage of the computing systems. This includes the help for technical and organizational aspects of the system usage, especially the support for system- and code optimization.
The local consultants at the computing centers of the universities and scientific research institutions are very important for the connection of HPC compute clusters on level 3 and the HLRN system. They support the users doing the step from the compute cluster towards the usage of the systems on level 2.
