HLRN-II system

Between 2008 and 2013 the HLRN-II system was operated at the two compute sites Zuse-Institut Berlin (ZIB) and Regionales Rechenzentrum für Niedersachsen (RRZN, today Leibniz Universität IT Services) in Hannover.

From the global system view HLRN-II consisted of two identical compute systems from the company SGI. Both complexes were coupled by the HLRN link, a dedicated fiber connection. The systems were named BICE (Berlin Altix ICE) and HICE (Hannover Altix ICE). The final system setup consisted of the partitions MPP and SMP on each of the sites.

    • 16 GB main memory
  • 960  Gainestown nodes, per node:
    • 2 Intel Xeon X5570 (Nehalem EP, 4 cores per socket), 2.93 GHz
    • 48 GB main memory
• SMP partition
  • 48 Harpertown nodes, SGI Altix XE 250, per node:
    • 2 Intel Xeon E5472 (4 cores per socket), 3.0 GHz
    • 64 GB mein memory
    • peak performance: 4.6 TFlop/s
  • 152 Beckton nodes, SGI Altix UltraViolet 1000, per node:
    • 2 Intel Xeon X7560 (8 cores per socket), 2.23 GHz
    • 64 GB main memory
    • NUMAlink5 interconnect, one shared memory within each rack
