After the decision in 2001 for a system from the company IBM between 2002 and 2008 the HLRN operated the first massive parallel compute system at the two sites Zuse-Institut Berlin (ZIB) and Regionales Rechenzentrum für Niedersachsen (RRZN, today, Leibniz Universität IT Services) in Hannover.
The HLRN system consisted of 32 compute nodes IBM p690 (Regatta). Each of the two installation sites ZIB and RRZN operated 16 nodes with an identical configuration. The Berlin system held the name Berni, the Hannover system the name Hanni. Both complexes were coupled by the HLRN link, a dedicated 1 GBit/s fiber connection. The final system setup consisted of the following components at each of both sites.
